Employee spotlight: Seth Straayer

At 3-GIS, our work is powered by more than technology. It is powered by our people. From problem-solving behind the scenes to supporting customers and teammates every day, our employees bring the experience, care, and creativity that move our company forward.

In today's post, we're highlighting Seth Straayer, Senior Consultant. We recently sat down with him to learn more about his background, gain his perspective on industry trends, and get his thoughts on where telecom is headed next.

1. How did you get started in the telecommunications field?

My career in telecom began in satellite communications, where I worked as a solutions engineer. I supported technologies such as MSAT, Iridium, INMARSAT, VSAT, and various packet data products. My role focused on designing solutions for business applications, and each project presented unique challenges, whether driven by the technology itself or the environment in which it was deployed.

2. What brought you to 3-GIS?

I have spent over 20 years in the fiber management space and have competed against 3-GIS since its early days. During that time, I had the opportunity to speak with many of their customers and consistently heard how loyal they are and how much they value the software.

When the company I was working for was acquired, I began exploring new opportunities and was recommended for this role by a former colleague. After meeting the team, it became clear that this was a strong cultural fit. I was drawn to the company’s customer first mindset, supported by a solid and well established product.

3. What emerging trends do you find most exciting or impactful in telecom today?

AI, without a doubt. While it is still early in its evolution, it is already making a meaningful impact for our customers. I am especially encouraged by the fact that successful AI solutions depend on high quality data. Having spent my career in software, that reality is both exciting and a bit humbling. Ultimately, I believe the organizations that invest in strong data foundations will be the ones that see the greatest success with AI.

4. What achievements or milestones are you particularly proud of in your career?

I have been fortunate to spend much of my career in sales, and seeing my customers succeed has been incredibly rewarding. One experience that stands out is supporting NGOs during the war in Kosovo, when Iridium donated satellite phones. Being part of an effort that helped connect displaced people with their families during a time of crisis had a lasting impact on me. It reinforced the importance of communication and the very human need to stay connected.

5. The telecommunications industry is known for its rapid changes. How do you stay adaptable in such a dynamic environment?

The best advice I have ever received is to stay curious. Early in my career, I was fortunate to be mentored by outstanding leaders and to work with customers who shared that same mindset. Collaboration with customers has been one of the most effective ways to build deep understanding. In this industry, no two organizations operate exactly the same way, and learning the reasons behind those differences is one of the fastest ways to grow.

6. What advice would you give to someone starting their career in the telecommunications industry?

I would encourage anyone starting out in telecom to ask questions with humility. This industry is full of experienced professionals who are passionate about sharing their knowledge and helping others learn. While it is competitive, it is also uniquely collaborative, which creates a great environment for growth.

Let’s get started.
